Savory Cheese Bread

Savory Cheese Bread

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup scrumptious Manitoba honey
  • 1 tbsp seasoned salt
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 pound grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 4 1/2 to 5 cups flour

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk just until bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Remove from heat.
  2. Add honey and seasoned salt, stirring until dissolved. Let cool to lukewarm.
  3. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a large bowl, stirring until dissolved.
  4. Stir in milk mixture, cheese, mustard, cayenne pepper and 2 cups of flour.
  5. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.
  6. Gradually add remaining flour; mix in the last of it by hand until dough leaves sides of the bow.
  7. Turn dough onto a lightly floured board. Grease fingers before kneading until smooth.
  8. Place it lightly greased side up and cover with a towel. Let rise in a warm place free from drafts, until doubled in size, about 2 hours.
  9. Punch down dough, turn onto lightly floured board, shape into loaf. Place in a greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
  10. Cover loaf with towel, let rise again until double, about 1 hour.
  11. Bake at 400Β°F for 30 to 35 minutes. Cover with foil and for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking.
